Lambert senior appointed to Naval Academy
SOUTH FORSYTH – A high school senior in Forsyth County is one step closer to determining what life will be like next year after being accepted into a military academy.
Kyle Vargas, a senior at Lambert High School, was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and is expected to attend after graduation this summer.
Vargas was nominated by 7th District U.S. Rep. Rob Woodall, who can appoint students in his district to one of the nation’s four military service academies.
The 7th Congressional District of Georgia includes south Forsyth and much of Gwinnett County. North Forsyth is in District 9.
In conjunction with attending Lambert in his final year, Vargas is dual enrolled in Georgia Tech’s distance math class, according to his mother, Ann Vargas.
“He was awarded the AP Scholar with Distinction last year, attended American Legion’s Boy’s State in 2015 and participates on the varsity cross country and track teams,” she said.
Vargas said her son plans to pursue a degree in engineering.
A member of Congress, the vice president or a service branch secretary can nominate students to an academy – the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.; Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.; Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y.; or Naval Academy.
Final appointments are made by individual academies.
Upon completion at the academy, Vargas will receive a commission as an officer in his chosen branch.
