Rep. Woodall Supports Legislation to Stop Robocalls
WASHINGTON, DC – On Wednesday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the bipartisan “Stopping Bad Robocalls Act.” This legislation requires phone carriers to implement call authentication technologies and call-blocking services, at no additional cost to the consumer, to better ensure that these aggravating calls are a thing of the past. It also empowers the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to better protect consumers from calls and texts they never agreed to receive, and it enhances the FCC’s enforcement capabilities.
“In 2018, more than 47 billion robocalls were placed nationwide, which is a 36% increase from 2017. What’s more, many robocalls come from scammers, and the most recent numbers I’ve seen from the FCC say that in 2016 alone, 22 million Americans lost a total of $9.5 billion. This is simply unacceptable,” said Congressman Woodall. “I'm glad that on an issue as important to the American people as this, the House could come together in a bipartisan manner to move legislation that takes much-needed steps to protect our seniors − and all individuals − from egregious attempts by bad actors to take advantage of them. I’m very proud of the work the House did, and I look forward to this bill moving to the President’s desk soon.”
