Seventh District Pulse - IRS Scandal
The media often reports on the partisanship in Washington, but today I want to tell you about an issue that has Congress working together: uncovering what happened inside the IRS. As you have likely heard, the IRS has admitted to specifically targeting "conservative sounding" groups for special scrutiny and delay, and Congress is working together to uncover exactly what happened and why.
The power of the executive branch is awesome, and the power of the IRS is particularly profound. The Constitution, in Article II, created the executive branch to administer the laws of the land, and in Article I, it created the Congress to oversee the executive. Given their experience, our framers had a healthy fear of unchecked executive power.
Shared concern over the political or unchecked use of executive power is bringing Congress together today to fully investigate what happened inside the IRS and why.

42.9% I have always believed that politicians use the IRS to target their enemies. In the 1960's, they targeted the NAACP. Today, they target the Tea Party. You cannot put so much power in one agency without fear of abuse. I know that this investigation is going to turn up even more abuses. It is time that we abolish the IRS or at the very least severely curtail its power.
33.6% Targeting any U.S. citizen for special IRS scrutiny because of his or her political beliefs is certainly un-American and ought to be criminal. From what I know, something very bad happened inside the IRS. I want to learn more about what happened and why, and I want those responsible to be held to account. The IRS might always be feared, but at the very least, it ought to be fair.
10.8% It sounds like this was an unfortunate misuse of power by a few low-level individuals, but it is nothing to get worked up about. Let's fix the problem, hold accountable those few workers who made a mistake, and move on. I think folks are blowing this way out of proportion for political gain.
8.2% All that we know comes from an IRS audit. Certainly, I am concerned if the IRS abused its power, but I am going to wait until we have had a full investigation before I make up my mind about what happened.
