State Legislative Branch: STEP 3
The Georgia General Assembly is a bicameral legislature, meaning it has two chambers. The General Assembly consists of 180 members, and 56 Senators. The House of Representatives initiates all state appropriations and revenue-raising bills.
The General Assembly holds the power to make any law that is consistent with the Georgia Constitution, as well as the United States Constitution, including: the participation of the state in Federal programs, taxation, promoting tourism, and natural resources not governed by the Federal Government. Also, the House of Representatives has the power to vote impeachment charges against any executive or judicial agents, and the Senate has the power to try impeachments.
A working knowledge of the legislative process at all levels of government is the responsibility of every citizen. I hope you will take the time to visit the Georgia General Assembly website or take a trip to the state capitol building in Atlanta.
